Connected for a Brighter Tomorrow

Alabama School Mental Health Network

Local Care. Statewide Connection. Support When Students Need It Most.

The Alabama School Mental Health Network (ASMHN) connects Alabama schools with local mental health professionals through a coordinated telehealth network, helping students access timely behavioral health support wherever they live.

When a student needs help, connection matters.

For students in rural communities, distance, transportation, and shortages of mental health professionals can make accessing care difficult.

ASMHN helps bridge that gap by connecting participating K–12 public schools with mental health professionals at Alabama Community Mental Health Centers through secure telehealth technology.

The result is a more direct pathway to support at school and closer to home.

How It Works

One Connection. A Network of Support.

1

Connect

When a student needs support, trained school personnel use the ASMHN telehealth platform to connect with a mental health professional.

2

Respond

The student is connected first with the Community Mental Health Center serving the school’s area for assessment and appropriate support.

3

Support

If the local provider is temporarily unavailable during a crisis, the statewide Network provides backup support.

4

Continue Care

When the student needs additional services, the student is referred to the local Community Mental Health Center for continued care.

Local Care. Statewide Support.

ASMHN brings together Community Mental Health Centers across Alabama to create a coordinated network of care for students.

Local providers remain at the heart of the model. They know their communities, understand local needs, and have established relationships with the schools and families they serve.

By connecting those providers through one statewide network, ASMHN lets them work together to expand access and provide additional support when needed.

Alabama Rural Health Transformation Program grant

The Alabama School Mental Health Network was established through a $935,895 Alabama Rural Health Transformation Program grant to expand school-based mental health crisis services through a coordinated telehealth model. The initiative initially focuses on communities where distance and provider shortages can create significant barriers to care, while building a network designed to expand access across Alabama.
